A report by the national advocacy group Inseparable has revealed that Indiana is only meeting 32 percent of its mental health workforce needs. The findings were published in The Workforce Report: Bridging the Mental Health Care Gap. The report identifies a significant pay disparity as a primary driver of the shortage, with a psychiatrist earning 80 cents compared to a traditional medical or surgical clinician earning just 80 cents. This disparity is deterring new doctors from entering the field and leading to patients seeking out-of-network care 3.6 times more often for mental health services than for physical medical procedures, resulting in high out-patient costs. Additionally, the report outlines a roadmap for state legislators to address these issues.
