Garrard Conley, author of "Boy Erased," was forced into conversion therapy at age 19 by his father, a Baptist pastor in Arkansas, when he was forced to attend a church-run program designed to cure his homosexuality or lose his family. Conley was subjected to six months of intense sessions that involved confession, control, and psychological pressure. The program, Love in Action, used a 12-step model based on Alcoholics Anonymous to lead people out of "the sin of homosexuality" under the doctrine of "every sin is equal." His book, adapted into a feature in 2018, was directed by Joel Edgerton and stars Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman, and Lucas Hedges. The Supreme Court recently ruled an 8-1 ruling limiting states' ability to ban conversion therapy for minors, framing the practice as protected speech.
