Florida sees new drowning cases involving children with autism

Two recent drowning incidents involving children with autism have been reported in Florida, one in Maitland and another in Miami, since January 1, have occurred. Since 2025, children with autistic children are expected to account for 78% of drowning deaths in lakes or ponds, contributing to a total of 119 child drownings statewide. Stacey Hoaglund, President of Disability Advocacy and Support Specialists, emphasised the importance of water safety for families. Two pieces of legislation passed by the Florida House and Senate aim to improve water safety awareness and access to swim education.
