Council tax headache for election candidates

The election for Bradford Council, currently run by Labour, is set to take place on 7 May. The BBC invited leaders of the main parties to a debate at Bradford College, where key issues included council tax rises of 9.99% and 4.99%. Susan Hinchcliffe, Labour leader, stated that the increase was a one-off increase and the council had to reduce council tax for those who need it. Matt Edwards, Green Party leader, said the Greens want to abolish council tax as it is fundamentally unfair. Brendan Stubbs, Liberal Democrats, and Ismail Uddin, Independents leader, argued that council tax increases were not helping residents improve their lives and the place where they live.
