GOVERNOR LAMONT ANNOUNCES LOWER ELECTRICITY RATES IN RESPONSE TO BENEFITS RECEIVED FROM NUCLEAR CONTRACTS AND OTHER STATE ENERGY POLICIES - DoingItLocal

The Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) has approved an interim decision that will lower residential electricity rates by approximately 14% starting May 1, 2026. The decrease is largely due to contracts negotiated by Governor Lamont with the Millstone and Seabrook nuclear power plants. The public benefits charge will now be a credit on ratepayers’ bills through at least September, rather than an additional charge. The rate adjustments are expected to be included in customer bills until September. Additionally, reforms to the Renewable Portfolio Standard and low-income discount rate and arrearage forgiveness options are also expected to save customers an additional $60 million per year starting in 2026 and further savings.
