Long lines, unpaid TSA workers: Experts say US air travel system in crisis

The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees, tasked with screening millions of people at airports across the country, have not been paid for over a month due to a partial government shutdown affecting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees the TSA. Long queues and increased call-out rates have caused long delays at airports, leading to hundreds of TSA employees quitting or refusing to show up for work. The administration of US President Donald Trump has deployed federal agents from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to fill gaps, which has been criticised for their lack of relevant training and aggressive methods. The delays have also exacerbated international travel issues, including cancelled or rerouted flights due to increased energy prices and concerns over security. The situation is due to ongoing negotiations over continued funding for DHS agencies and ongoing demands from activists and Democratic lawmakers to rein in immigration agencies.
