U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested an illegal immigrant in Fairfax County, Virginia, Marco Tulio Lopez-Romero, 44, who is wanted for murder in his home country of El Salvador. Lopez entered the United States in July 2016 and is currently in ICE custody pending the outcome of removal proceedings. ICE Director Robert Guadian stated that Lopez was the type of illegal alien fugitive that ICE will not allow to roam free in communities. The arrest comes amid criticism of Fairfax County's "sanctuary" policies for illegal immigrants, which have been criticized by the U.S., Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger, who ended state law enforcement working with ICE to deport violent illegal immigrants.
