The county of San Diego has filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration, seeking full access to conduct a public health inspection of the Otay Mesa Detention Center. The lawsuit was filed after county Supervisors Terra Lawson-Remer and Supervisor Paloma Aguirre gave an ultimatum to the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and private prison operator CoreCivic, all defendants. The complaint argues that state law allows county health officials to conduct such inspections and is seeking a preliminary injunction to allow the county’s public health officer to fully inspect the detention center while the case is ongoing. The detention center is one of seven private immigration detention facilities operating in California and is run by the Tennessee-based private prison operators CoreCivity.
