Clarifai, a facial-recognition AI company, has confirmed it has deleted approximately three million OkCupid user photos and facial recognition models trained on these images following the US Federal Trade Commission's settlement with the dating site over a privacy violation dating back to 2014. The transfer breached OkCidid's privacy policy and led to no financial penalties for Clarifai. The company was not accused of wrongdoing and received the data through a request rather than initiating the transfer. The FTC does not have authority to issue fines for violations of this type under Section 5 of the FTC Act. The settlement has been criticised by some, including Representative Lori Trahan, who called it a step in the right direction but criticised the FTC for settling the issue.
