A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center has found that Americans are changing their minds about China, the US's largest rival. The survey, which surveyed over 8,500 adults, found that by 2023, only 14% of Americans had a favorable view of China, now stands at 27%, reflecting a significant shift in sentiment across the American public, particularly among Democrats and young people. This shift reflects a greater interest in Chinese culture and entertainment on Western social media, as seen in trends such as “Chinamaxxing.” Fewer respondents called China an enemy now compared to last year, while most still see it as a major competitor of the US. The study also revealed a softening of attitudes toward China’s authoritarian leader Xi Jinping and increased skepticism of US President Donald Trump. The shift in opinion comes as China prepares to meet with him in Beijing in May.
