The Guadalajara Film Festival's (FICG) prominent LGBTQ+ strand, the Premio Maguey, is celebrating its 15th year, marking a milestone dubbed Queerciañera. The first queer film award to be launched in Mexico and Latin America in 2012, the festival's director, Pavel Cortes, reflected on the impact the Premion Maguety has had on Mexico and its legitimization of sexual diversity and culture. Despite this, Cortes noted that Mexico remains an intolerant country towards sexual diversity, with a significant record of hate crimes and transfemicides. The 15th edition of the festival will feature seven Mexican films out of the 16 that make up our official competition for Best Film, the Jury Prize and Best Performance.
