The historic East Wing of the White House was demolished last year to make way for President Donald Trump’s new ballroom construction. The Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, dedicated in 1965 by first lady Lady Bird Johnson, was also dismantled. The iconic I.M. Pei-designed pergola was put into storage and its trees were sent to nurseries for preservation. Plans for the landscaping around the new ball room have been unveiled by landscape architect Rick Parisi and have been met with controversy, with some suggesting they offer little visual reference to the Kennedy Garden. The South Lawn driveway, part of a historic design incorporating ellipses, will also be reconfigured to accommodate the 89,000-square-foot ballroom. The public comment portion of the NCPC meeting was overwhelmingly negative, with experts criticizing the new driveway design.
