In 2025, LA County recorded the highest number of flea-borne typhus cases ever recorded, with 220 cases reported. This is a 17% increase from the previous year, according to the LA County Department of Public Health. Among the cases, three localized outbreaks occurred in Central Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Willowbrook. 90% of the cases were hospitalized. The disease has been a major issue for LA County over the past decade, particularly in 2019 when it became a political issue due to a typhus outbreak in downtown Los Angeles. The most recent data for Long Beach shows 34 typhus incidents between January and October, making 2025 a record-breaking year. Residents can protect against the disease by using flea control on pets year-round, avoiding handling or feeding stray animals, and keeping wildlife away by security trash cans.
