The former New York Governor, Michael Paterson, has stated that Netflix's acquisition deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, which would have seen the company acquire the Max streaming service, the Warner Bros film production studio, and a host of popular franchises, was cancelled after Paramount won the bidding to buy Warner Bros., which Paramount reportedly won. Paterson argues that this move avoids further harm to the New York film and television industry, which supports 185,000 total jobs and accounts for $18.1 billion in wages and $81.6 billion in total economic output. The loss of this deal would have significantly reduced competition in the industry, reducing jobs, wages, and bargaining power for unions like SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild.
