The demand for artificial intelligence (artificial intelligence) may be overstated, with companies such as Anthropic potentially positioned as the best-positioned AI company if a correction is made. The company's use of tokens, the basic unit of AI usage, is becoming a distorted metric, with one million tokens of input (prompts) costing $5 and one million units of output (the model's responses), costing $25. However, companies like Meta and Shopify have created internal leaderboards tracking employee usage of tokens. Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, has warned that companies are committing billions for demand they can't verify, and if they buy too little or not, they risk losing customers due to insufficient capacity. The firm has also cut off some third-party tools that were large consumers of tokens while OpenAI has been making AI cheaper and easier to consume at scale.
