NYC public schools OK AI use in lesson plans, not grades or discipline

New York City public schools have released a long-awaited artificial intelligence guidance, allowing teachers to use the technology in lesson planning and unit planning, but not in key decisions about students. The guidance, which was released more than three years after the city temporarily banned AI chatbots on school networks and devices, marks the first time the nation's largest school district has offered real support around AI use in the classroom. It includes a "traffic light" framework that outlines some prohibited uses and approved uses, including those for student research, exploration, and creative projects. However, it does not include guidance for teachers on how to design instruction so AI supports student thinking.
