'It's About Control': MA Gov. Healey Falls Short Of House Bill Pushing Teen Social Media Ban

Gov. Maura Healey has proposed a series of mandates on social media companies, including limiting app-use times for teens and deactivating location tracking programs and youth-targeted advertising. However, she fell short of endorsing the House of Representatives' proposed social media ban for those younger than 14 years. Healey called her proposals as "not a ban" but a demand that social media firms respond to potential harm to young people's mental health. The proposed restrictions include a two-hour limit per day for those under 18, disabling of auto-play and infinite scroll features that Healey claims drive social media obsession among young people. The bill would need to be reconciled with a Senate bill that bans all cell phones in schools but does not address overall social media use.
