The Alzheimer’s Disease Association of Kern County (ADAKC) has announced it is closing its adult day program, a service caregivers have relied on for loved ones with dementia. The program, which served up to 50 people a day at its peak before the COVID-19 pandemic, will close at the end of May and hours will be reduced to 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., raising concerns about the future of the program. The ADAKC stated that the decision was not due to mismanagement or a sudden financial emergency, but the model of the adult day programs has become "structurally unsustainable" as funding has shifted towards clinical, outcomes-based, and home and community-based services. The organization plans to expand services differently, starting in 2026 as a mobile, countywide dementia caregiver support hub.
