An internal Pentagon email has suggested that the United States may suspend Spain from NATO and review the U.S. position on Britain's claim to the Falkland Islands. The policy options were outlined in a note expressing frustration over allies' reluctance or refusal to support U.K. operations in the Iran war. The email also suggested suspending "difficult" countries from important NATO positions. President Donald Trump has criticised NATO allies for not sending their navies to help open the Strait of Hormuz, which was closed to global shipping following the start of the air war. However, the email does not suggest that the US would close bases in Europe. The potential policy options are intended to send a strong signal to NATO allies and reduce European sense of entitlement.
