Shonda Rhimes, creator of "Grey's Anatomy" and "Nightly", has defended the exclusion of actor Eric Dane from the Oscars' In Memoriam section, stating that he was not a movie star and therefore deserves to be immortalized at the Emmys. Dane, who died in February at 53 after a battle with ALS, was one of several prominent actors not included in the In Memorium segment. The Oscars expanded this year to include larger tributes to Robert Redford, Diane Keaton, and Rob Reiner. Rhimes praised Dane for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan on the ABC medical drama, and expressed her belief that he would be remembered at the next Emmy Awards.
