The candidate field for Utah's newly created 1st Congressional District has been finalized after the March 13 filing deadline passed. The district is expected to give Democrats a chance to their first congressional seat in Utah since 2021. However, it has also attracted Republicans and other third-party candidates. Democrats, including state Sen. Michael Farrell and Salt Lake City Council member Eva Lopez Chavez, are campaigning for raising the federal minimum wage to $20 an hour, building more housing to lower rents, and establishing universal child care and paid parental leave. Other candidates include Luis Villarreal, a software engineer, and Stone Fonua.
