State lawmakers have approved a bill to prevent new immigration detention centers from being located within 1,500 feet of schools, churches, day care centers, cemeteries, public parks, forest preserves, private residences and public housing. The bill was supported by House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch and Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson, who represent the area where a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement processing center was a significant center during Operation Midway Blitz. The current facility where the current facility was used in anti-ICE protests was not affected by the bill. However, it is expected to be challenged in the courts if it passes.
