A study by the University of California, San Diego researchers has found that diabetes in Latino adults is linked to biological signals that may increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease. The study followed over 6,000 Latinos in cities with a large Latino population, including San Diego, who are middle-aged and older, following their findings. The researchers found that diabetic individuals have higher blood signal levels related to abnormal tau protein, a protein harmful in Alzheimer’s disease, which causes disruptions to brain functions. This suggests that a person's metabolic health may also play a role in a person’s cognitive health. The research team hopes to study if diabetic management can reverse these blood levels and possibly reduce dementia risk.
