France is experiencing an increase in violent crime against the crypto community, known as "wrench attacks", which are becoming more frequent, brazen and violent. This year alone, France has reported at least 41 crypto-related kidnappings and home invasions, one of which occurred every two to three days. The country has also experienced a rise in physical assault incidents, up 250% year-over-year. The trend is also on the rise globally, with 72 verified physical coercion incidents globally in 2025, a 75% increase from the previous year. The number of potential victims has also increased, with mid-level holders increasingly targeted. Researchers have noted a shift from ‘find a wallet’ to ‘hunt a person,’ and attackers use social media activity, public appearances, leaked datasets to identify potential victims.
