Facing budget shortfall, Portland Public Schools plans 4 furlough days this spring
Published on March 23, 2026.
Portland Public Schools (PPS) may have four furlough days this spring due to a budget shortfall, part of a plan to address the issue. The decision comes after meetings between the Portland Association of Teachers and district officials aimed at addressing the shortfall while maintaining classroom stability. The teachers union voted to ratify a "Memorandum of Understanding" which includes four unpaid days of rest and allows the district to avoid educator layoffs for the 2025–26 school year. The agreement still needs to be ratified by the district and will be brought before the board on March 31 for ratification. While the district states that the changes are in the best interest of students, some parents have called for more effort from the state to improve the budget crisis.
