The first NCAA men's basketball championship was held at Northwestern University in 1939, with the Oregon Ducks defeating Ohio State 46-33. The Chicago Daily News credited with giving the North Side baseball team its nickname, the Chicago Cubs, in 1902. The event occurred at the same time as the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) decided to hold its own tournament.
