India looks to turn LPG import crisis into push for piped gas

India is using a cooking gas crisis to plug leaks in its local distribution chain and encourage a shift towards piped gas as it aims to reduce liquefied petroleum gas imports and spending on subsidies. The government has invoked emergency powers to ensure limited LPG supplies are used for household use and will halt supplies after three months for customers linked to these connections. This comes as India adds 580,000 new households to its piped-gassed supply network in March, compared to 342,300 a year earlier. The country's LPG imports could decline by about 10% to 15% by 2030, according to credit-rating agency ICRA. The shift away from LPG to pipled gas would help contain fiscal pressures and improve supply efficiency.
