Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has again vetoed a measure that would temporarily give tenants more time to pay rent payments following Operation Metro Surge. This comes as he argues that more time won't improve outcomes in relation to the mandatory 30-day waiting period between landlords notifying tenants of an eviction and filing for one in court. In explaining his decision, Frey said his preference is for increasing financial aid for rent payments rather than extending the waiting period. The city requires 30 days’ notice prior to an eviction filing, which Frey has previously rejected. The St. Paul City Council unanimously approved a similar measure extending the eviction waiting period to 60 days in March. Meanwhile, eviction filings in Minnesota have surpassed 2025's pace into April, surpassing the record pace set in 2025.
