D-Day for DHS
Published on March 26, 2026.
The clock is running out for Democrats and Republicans to resolve the nearly six-week shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Both chambers are set to break for a two-week recess starting tomorrow. Senate Majority Leader John Thune warned that the lack of a deal could jeopardize the entire recess. The funding deal put together by Republican senators with the White House earlier this week was rejected by Democrats, and the Democratic counteroffer was rejected as a nonstarter by Republicans. The Senate voted against funding for the sixth time yesterday and the House is voting for the third time on funding and a resolution expressing support for the department. President Donald Trump has not publicly supported the deal Republicans helped broker. The House is also considering a reconciliation bill that would include funds for ICE, but Republicans are divided on how to fully offset spending cuts.
