Scientists have captured the first-ever footage of a sperm whale headbutting another, seemingly random, off the Azores and Balearic Islands. This is one of three cases reported between 2020 and 2022. The footage was filmed using a drone and has been described as an exciting discovery by the lead author at the University of Hawaii. It is unclear why the behavior originates from competition and physical contests between males, but some believe it is unlikely to evolve as a widespread behavior due to the use of the head as a weapon to damage brain structures vital for echolocation and social communication. The discovery raises questions about the role of this behavior in whale groups.
