A new study by scientists from the Zhejiang University School of Medicine in China has found that a customized version of the Mediterranean diet, the MIND diet, is associated with slower brain aging. The study, which included 1,647 adults in middle age and older, found a positive correlation with losing less brain tissue over time. Participants were followed for around 12 years via self-reported dietary habits and MRI brain scans. Participants with diets more MIND-like also had less ventricular enlargement, another sign of brain tissue loss. However, the study did not directly attribute these findings to specific factors such as age, education, sleep quality or genetics. The researchers suggest that promoting the MND diet as a part of dietary guidelines could be an effective strategy to address the growing burden of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.
