The Alaska Senate has passed a resolution calling for a constitutional amendment that would allow for the creation of a dedicated fund for education spending. The current Alaska Constitution prevents the construction of dedicated funds for state revenue. The proposed amendment would amend the constitution to allow the Legislature to create a dedicated education fund. The resolution passed 17-3, three votes more than the required two-thirds majority to pass a proposed amendment to the constitution. If passed by the House, the amendment would go to a public vote on November's general election ballot. The education fund would consist of land transfers and money appropriated to it by the Legislature. Currently, any money put into the fund can only be used for public education, but there are no specifications about how or what revenue goes into it. School districts across Alaska have complained that state education funding is not keeping up with what it costs to run schools.
