According to NASA, astronauts are paid according to the "general services" pay scale, which is how federal officials determine a government employee's salary. The agency stated that astronauts should make around $152,258 per year, adjusted to reflect increases over the years. While these astronauts may not make much compared to most professions, some are paid more than most government employees. The Canadian Space Agency also has a similar pay structure based on levels for its astronauts.
