The Houston Independent School District (HISD) has announced that it will no longer observe César Chávez Day on March 30, but instead will designate March 30 as Farmworkers Day. This comes after allegations of sexual assault against Chacvez, a Latino icon who led the United Farm Workers union, were brought to light. Labor rights activist Dolores Huerta revealed that she was sexually abused by Chavez, who died more than three decades ago. HuERTa said she kept her secret for 60 years out of fear of damaging the farmworker movement. Since the allegations, several Cesar Chavez celebrations in San Francisco, Texas and his home state of Arizona have been cancelled.
