A proposal that would have threatened the lone Republican congressional seat in Maryland has failed to pass in the Maryland Senate, despite high-profile Democrats' efforts. The proposal was supported by Democrats in both the Maryland House of Delegates and the Senate, as well as Governor Wes Moore, who has been governor since 2023. The Maryland House passed the map overwhelmingly in February. However, Democratic Senate President Bill Ferguson has refused to vote on a new map, claiming it could jeopardize the current map by prompting judicial review.
