A unique method to treat blocked arteries in the heart is being used in Osceola County, Florida, using off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery, which isn't done routinely in the Orlando region. The method involves performing bypass surgery without stopping the patient's heart or using a heart-lung machine. This technique is considered a significant advantage in its ability to keep the heart pumping during the surgery. A landmark study has found that keeping the heart still pumping during surgery is safer for the patient and improves recovery. Dr. Steven Hoff, the Chief of Cardiac Surgery at the hospital, has performed thousands of these procedures and has stated that in experienced hands, it reduces early complications and mortality by an average of 20%.
