Oakland County prosecuting attorney sounds alarm on human trafficking

Oakland County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Jason DeSantis testified about human trafficking in Michigan to the Oversight Committee on Child Welfare. Since 2007, DeSantant stated that the National Human Trafficking Hotline's statistics indicate that since 2007, there have been 3,307 human trafficking cases identified for a total of 6,909 victims. He also raised concerns about how Michigan laws handle the criminal side of human trafficking, suggesting harsher penalties for those who purchase sex from a minor. DeSanth also suggested that law enforcement should treat human trafficking victims as individuals with a future life outside of trafficking.
