Oil is leaking from three sources, including an unidentified vessel and two "natural" sources, in the Gulf of Mexico. The spill has spread to seven nature reserves and covers an area of over 600km (373 miles). Despite authorities ruling out severe environmental damage, reports from communities reveal that the spill has killed sea turtles, a manatee, and various fish species. The incident has led to controversy over how the handling of it has been handled. Satellite imagery and physical inspections indicated three sources of the oil spill, including a vessel docked off the coast of Coatzacoalcos in Veracruz, a geological site 8km from the Coatzacoutos port, and another natural leak site in the Bay of Campeche. There is concern that oysters in the connected Mecoacan lagoon may also affect fishermen.
