Offshore wind's (tenuous) lease on life

President Donald Trump won a high-profile victory in his anti-wind campaign when Ocean Winds agreed to return two of its offshore wind leases, in New York and California, back to the Interior Department. However, the deal excluded the developer's third lease, which is the most likely to result in a project. This move reflects the state of Trump's war on wind, which has failed to stop projects under construction but managed to persuade companies without permits to give back wind leases. The deal includes reimbursing Ocean Winds for its leasing fees if the developer invests in equivalent investments in U.S. oil and gas projects. The president’s promises to lower oil prices have kept the global price of oil at around $100 per barrel on the futures market, significantly less than the current global supply.
