Native Hawaiian education programs get $50 million temporary reprieve

Sen. Brian Schatz secured a one-year extension from the U.S. Department of Education, saving nearly $50 million for Native Hawaiian education programs. The extension means that all programs will have enough funds for the next school year and the following year. Many nonprofits had been scrambling for backup funding sources. Schatz argued that the extension gives time to resolve legal disputes over the department's role in funding.
