The US Supreme Court has overturned a ruling in Chiles v. Salazar that invalidates a Colorado ban on gay “conversion therapy” for minors, a type of therapy aimed at steering a minor away from same-sex attraction or a chosen transgender identity. California has a similar law and the Court's reasoning could undermine California's own ban. Justice Neil Gorsuch, writing for the majority, said Colorado's law “censors speech based on viewpoint” and that this is a harsh sentence for defenders of California’s law. The court's decision signals a significant setback for California Democrats, who have built an entire policy framework around the idea that the state can dictate acceptable viewpoints in sensitive areas.
