The sudden collapse of Spirit Airlines occurred over the weekend, with all flights cancelled, and the loss of 17,000 employees. Voice actor Hunter Peterson, known for his criticism of the airline, suggested that 20% of American adults could contribute to purchasing the company. Within hours, he launched a website and attracted 36,000 "founding patrons" to pledge nearly $23 million, which quickly crashed his servers. However, these pledges are non-binding and the cost of acquiring and relaunching an airline could reach the billions.
