X is ending its Communities feature, launched in 2021, due to low usage and high levels of spam. The feature, introduced as a place for social network users to connect around shared interests, was overwhelmed with spam and was difficult to manage. X's head of product, Nikitia Bier, stated that Communities were used less than 0.4% of users and contributed to 80% of spam reports, financial scams, and malware on X. Bier suggested that most of these communities were used primarily for user-acquisition channels for Kick or compensated clipper communities. Communities will be shut down on May 6, 2026, with community admins able to migrate their members to a revamped group chat experience.
