NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has captured a rare moment of a comet breaking apart in real time, with the space telescope observing comet C/2025 K1 (ATLAS), or K1. The discovery was made just a month after K1's closest approach to the sun. Astronomers observed K1 over three consecutive days, from Nov. 8 through Nov. 10, 2025, and found it had already begun breaking apart before turning its gaze towards it. The telescope captured the comet splitting into at least four pieces, each surrounded by its own coma. The findings reveal that K1 may have been triggered by its close approach to sun when heating and stress are at their peak. The breakup revealed an additional mystery as ground-based observers did not see the comet brighten immediately, as expected when fresh ice is exposed.
