Four Pomona gang members, Michael Lerma, Carlos Gonzalez, Juan Sanchez, and Jose Valencia Gonzalez, have been sentenced to life in federal prison for racketeering crimes, including the 2020 murder of a federal inmate at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles. The killing was reportedly retaliation for unpaid drug debts owed to a faction of the Mexican Mafia prison gang. The defendants were found guilty in March 2025 after a 20-day trial that detailed the killing. Prosecutors allege that Lerma controlled and extorted Latino street gangs in Pomona for years and also influenced incarcerated Latinos.
