Researchers have found that some common medications may be linked to autism, including those taken during pregnancy. The study, published in Molecular Psychiatry, found a potential link between autism risk and certain medications that interfere with cholesterol production. These included antidepressants, antipsychotics, heart medications, and the cholesterol-killing statins. The researchers found that taking at least one of these medications during pregnancy was associated with a 47% relative increase in autism risk. The risk increased further when multiple drugs were taken together. However, this is not a definitive cause-and-effect finding, it merely indicates that patients should stop taking prescribed medications without consulting their doctors.
