Person dead after fighting San Jose electric-bike battery fire

One person died after attempting to extinguish a fire started by an electric-bicycle battery in a San Jose apartment. The incident occurred in the unit on Norwalk Drive near Highway 280. Most rechargeable devices powered by lithium-ion batteries, responsible for 65% of such fires in 2024. The San Jose Fire Department warns against attempting to fight a battery fire, stating that people should leave immediately if a battery starts smoking or catches fire, and if possible, close doors behind them.
