A California jury found Meta and Google liable in a landmark social media addiction trial, the first bellwether trial to determine whether social media platforms can be treated as defective products like a faulty car seat or a contaminated drug. The plaintiff, identified only as K.G.M. and referred to in court as Kaley, claimed that her use of YouTube and Instagram amplified personal struggles into body dysmorphia, depression, and suicidal thoughts. The jury awarded six of these six cases, largely consisting of $3 million in compensatory damages and $3 $3M in punitive damages, split 70-30 between the two companies. The verdict was significant for the financial significance of the financial impact of the ruling, not the financial value, but the potential for the future of the social media industry. The ruling could potentially pose a threat to the industry's business model, according to Goldman Sachs associate dean Eric Goldman Sachs.
