The political influence of AI companies is increasing, with companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI becoming more prominent in the political landscape. Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot, has been involved in a high-profile conflict with the Pentagon over its technology being used for autonomous killer drone storms and mass surveillance. This conflict led to the Department of Defense designating Anthropic as a supply chain risk and barring the use of its tools at the Pentagon. However, shortly after the Pentagon’s designation, OpenAI cut a new defense deal, the details of which are not fully public. While Anthropic's current defense contracts total only about $200 million, this issue is currently being litigated. The political moves by these companies are seen as a byproduct of shifting business models and as many in Silicon Valley become more comfortable with military contracts, they may have lost touch with public sentiment on privacy and surveillance issues due to their reliance on military contracts.
