Alameda County is accused of secretly recording attorney-client jail meetings, raising constitutional concerns about whether the county improperly recorded privileged attorney- client communications. The discovery, which occurred during a defense attorney's review of evidence for a murder trial, led to Crystal Espinoza's release from jail without bail and halted her trial. The breach could have implications for other criminal cases. A judge has ordered prosecutors and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office to stop listening to jail recordings tied to Espinoz’ case until further notice. Confidential conversations between attorneys and clients are protected under state and federal law and the U.S. Constitution. The issue has not been resolved yet, with Alameda county's lawyers now stating that Global Tel Link has the sole ability to switch off these recordings.
